1/24/2020 PS 1 Mindtrap Questions

After hearing the description of the situation below, record a yes or no question that will help the class solve the crime.
Detective Shadow picked up the Begile Beaver newspaper and a coffee and sat back at his desk. Beyond his window was a beautiful view of the Begile harbor.  As dawn broke, he could see the cranes beginning to load the 20,000-ton ship.  Coincidentally, there was a front-page story about a Singaporean company that purchased 40,000 Begile lawn tractors that were allegedly being loaded onto the ship that day.  Further into the newspaper article, Shadow read about a Singapore drug cartel that was rapidly increasing its Begile trade. "The good and the bad," thought Shadow as he finished his coffee and headed off to the City Hall courthouse. Seven hours later Shadow was back at his desk writing his reports when he saw the ship leaving Begile headed for Singapore.   At that moment Shadow suspected something very fishy about the ship. Why?

2/18/20 Walk This Way - Position vs. Time Graphs

This week we have been working on finishing up our battery-powered vehicle experiment reports.  We also have been making position vs. time graphs from word descriptions and vice versa.   Today, we used a motion detector to create a position vs. time graph of our own motion.

1/13/20 Capstone Experiment and Types of Matter

Today we considered the following question as we finalized our capstone experiment design:  “What would someone have to do prove my hypothesis?” We also completed a debate as to whether apple juice and Gatorade our pure substances using kialo-edu.com .  The class concluded that neither are pure substances because they are both made of multiple substances.
"When a student first approaches a problem, success hinges on his/her ability to maintain an awareness of what decisions he/she is making and why he/she is making them." Sam Rhodes Here is the problem we tackled today: A student leaves the PAC at position -15.2m at 8:27 AM. She enters Senora Olsen's classroom at 8:31 AM at position 32.0 m.  What was her average velocity? UNDERSTAND - Draw a diagram. PLAN - Use an equation (v=change in position/time) or graph (position vs. time). SOLVE - 11.8 m/min REFLECT - Graphs can also be used to solve problems.  Record equations before inserting numbers.  Include units with all numbers.
